We love the sheer drama of this landscape. The air here feels so clean, carrying the scent of damp earth and pine needles from the ancient araucaria forests. We recommend taking a moment to simply stand and absorb the scale of it all – the immense volcanoes rising above impossibly blue lakes. The sunsets, when they break through the clouds, paint the sky in fiery hues, reflecting perfectly on the water. It's a place that feels both wild and profoundly peaceful.
Terrain & Altitude
Volcanic highlands and rolling hills dominate the landscape, sculpted by ancient glaciers and active volcanoes.
300-2,500m above sea level
Vegetation
Dense evergreen forests, featuring the iconic monkey puzzle trees (Araucaria araucana), give way to alpine meadows and peat bogs at higher elevations.
Water Sources
A network of crystal-clear glacial lakes and fast-flowing rivers fed by snowmelt and rainfall crisscross the region.
Unique Features
The presence of numerous active and dormant volcanoes, often snow-capped, creates a dramatic and dynamic backdrop to the lush forests and lakes.
While flying into Temuco (ZCO) is the most convenient option, we often find that driving offers a far richer introduction to the region's staggering beauty. Renting a car in Santiago gives you the freedom to stop at viewpoints and explore smaller towns at your own pace. Don't rush the journey; the scenery is as much a part of the experience as the destination itself.

Driving Routes
From Santiago
We recommend taking the Ruta 5 Sur highway. It's a straightforward drive on good quality tarmac, but it's a long day. Consider breaking it up with an overnight stop in Talca or Chillán if you prefer a more relaxed journey.
From Puerto Montt
A scenic drive north along the Ruta 5 Sur. This is a much shorter option if you are already in the southern regions of Chile. The landscape becomes increasingly dramatic as you head towards the volcanoes.
