    Planning & reference

Reserva Nacional China Muerta offers a raw, untamed Patagonian experience that we absolutely love. The dramatic landscapes, with their windswept plains and rugged mountains, are breathtaking. We recommend taking a guided walk to truly appreciate the subtle beauty and the chance encounters with guanacos and condors.

    Gate Times

The park is generally open from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, but we advise checking the official CONAF website for the most up-to-date hours, especially during shoulder seasons. No advance booking is typically required for day visitors, but for overnight stays in designated camping areas, reservations are highly recommended, particularly during peak Chilean holidays.

    Tipping

Tipping is not mandatory but is greatly appreciated for exceptional service. For private guides, we recommend 10-15 USD per person per day. For camp staff, a small collective tip of 5-10 USD per person for the duration of your stay is a good gesture. Rangers do not expect tips, but a sincere thank you for their work is always welcome.

    Dress Code

We advise dressing in layers. Neutral, earthy tones like khaki, olive green, and brown are best for blending in. For game drives and walks, comfortable trousers, long-sleeved shirts for sun and insect protection, a fleece or warm jacket for cooler mornings and evenings, and sturdy walking shoes are essential. In camp, casual and comfortable attire is perfectly fine.

    Photography

Photography is generally permitted, but we urge you to be respectful of wildlife and avoid intrusive behaviour. Drones are typically prohibited within national parks in Chile; always confirm current regulations before flying. For stunning shots, focus on capturing the dramatic landscapes and the unique flora and fauna. Early morning and late afternoon light offer the most sensational photographic opportunities.

    Etiquette

Maintain a low noise level at all times to avoid disturbing wildlife and other visitors. Always stay within designated viewing areas and never approach or feed animals. When on foot, follow your guide's instructions implicitly. In camp, be mindful of shared spaces and respect quiet hours.
