We love the sheer variety here. One moment you're breathing in the salty air of the Pacific coast, the next you're surrounded by the deep green of vineyards stretching towards the imposing Andes. The air in the valleys is thick with the scent of ripening grapes and wild herbs, a sensory feast we never tire of. Higher up, the landscape sharpens, the vegetation thins, and the views become truly breathtaking.
Terrain & Altitude
Rolling hills and fertile valleys dominate, transitioning to coastal plains and rugged Andean foothills.
Sea level - 3,000m above sea level
Vegetation
Mediterranean scrubland, sclerophyllous forests, and vineyards characterize the lower elevations, giving way to alpine meadows higher up.
Water Sources
The region is crisscrossed by several important rivers originating in the Andes, feeding fertile valleys and coastal estuaries.
Unique Features
The dramatic shift from arid coastal zones to lush, irrigated agricultural land and then to high alpine environments within a relatively short distance.
While Santiago International is your likely entry point, we find that renting a car offers the most freedom to explore the diverse valleys and coastlines at your own pace. For remote vineyard stays or specific coastal towns, domestic flights to smaller regional airports like La Serena can save considerable driving time.
