Conservation Status
Conservation hubFaces an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild.
The primary threats to Sumatran orangutans are habitat loss due to deforestation for palm oil plantations and logging, as well as illegal pet trade. While conservation efforts are ongoing, including habitat restoration and anti-poaching patrols, their populations continue to decline. Responsible safari tourism can help by supporting local communities and conservation organizations, raising awareness, and providing an economic incentive to protect the remaining forests.
The Sumatran orangutan is one of the three species of orangutans. Critically endangered, and found only in the north of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, it is rarer than the Bornean orangutan but more common than the recently identified Tapanuli orangutan, also found in Sumatra.
