    More details

We love the raw, untamed beauty of Niokolo-Koba. The sheer scale of the park is breathtaking, a true wilderness that feels a world away. The air hums with the sounds of unseen life, and the sunsets over the savanna are simply sensational. It's a place where you can truly connect with the wild heart of West Africa.

    Terrain & Altitude

Vast, rolling savanna plains are punctuated by rocky outcrops and seasonal floodplains.

    50-300m above sea level

    Vegetation

Dominated by dry tropical savanna grasses, scattered acacia trees, and gallery forests along riverbanks.

    Water Sources

The mighty Niokolo-Koba River and its tributaries, along with numerous seasonal pools and waterholes, are vital for wildlife, especially during the dry season.

    Unique Features

Niokolo-Koba is one of West Africa's most important strongholds for large mammal populations, including the rare western chimpanzee and a significant number of lions and leopards.

While the journey to Niokolo-Koba can feel long, we find it's part of the adventure, offering a true sense of West African landscapes unfolding. We strongly recommend hiring a reliable 4WD vehicle with an experienced local driver, as self-driving can be challenging, particularly outside the dry season. Consider breaking up the drive from Dakar with an overnight stay in Kaolack or Tambacounda to truly savor the experience.

    Nearest Airports

Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS), Dakar

    550km / 7-8 hour drive

Direct flights from Paris on Air France, Brussels on Brussels Airlines, and Lisbon on TAP Air Portugal. Excellent regional connections across West Africa.

    Tambacounda Airport (TBD)

    100km / 1.5-2 hour drive

Irregular domestic flights from Dakar on local carriers, or private charter flights. We recommend checking schedules well in advance.

    Bush Airstrips

    Simenti Airstrip

    Driving Routes

    From Dakar

    7-8 hours

Primarily good tarmac roads for the first part, then transitioning to well-maintained but sometimes rougher sections as you approach Tambacounda and the park. A robust 4WD is highly recommended, especially during the wet season (July-October) when some sections can become challenging.

    From Tambacounda

    1.5-2 hours

A mix of paved and unpaved roads. The final stretch into the park is dirt track, requiring a reliable 4WD vehicle. We recommend arranging a transfer with your lodge or a reputable local operator for a seamless journey.
