Frequently Asked Questions

What's the best way to experience the wildlife around Mvuu Camp, and what should we pack for it?

We absolutely love the boat safaris on the Shire River; they offer a unique perspective on hippos, crocodiles, and incredible birdlife you won't see from a vehicle. For game drives and walking safaris, pack light, breathable layers in neutral colours, a good wide brimmed hat, and of course, your binoculars. Remember comfortable walking shoes for those bush walks – the lodge's location is teeming with life.

We're keen birders. Is Mvuu Camp a good destination for spotting Malawi's avian species?

Mvuu Camp is a birder's paradise, truly. We've spent hours just from our treehouse deck watching a constant stream of activity, and the guided birding walks are exceptional. Expect to see a dazzling array of water birds along the river, plus raptors and smaller bush species deeper in Liwonde National Park.

What kind of accommodation can we expect at Mvuu Camp, and is it suitable for families?

The treehouse accommodation at Mvuu Camp is charming and surprisingly spacious, offering a real sense of immersion in nature. While we find it incredibly romantic for couples, they do have options that can accommodate families, so it's worth inquiring about their specific family units. Waking up to the sounds of the bush from your elevated perch is an unforgettable experience.

Beyond game drives and boat safaris, what other unique activities does Mvuu Camp offer?

We highly recommend the bush breakfasts; imagine enjoying a delicious meal surrounded by the sounds and sights of Liwonde National Park – it’s magical. Sundowners by the river are also a must, with the sunsets over the water being absolutely sensational. They also offer a small spa, which is a lovely treat after a day of exploring.

What is the best time of year to visit Mvuu Camp for optimal wildlife viewing and comfortable weather?

We find the dry season, from May to October, offers the best game viewing as wildlife congregates around dwindling water sources. The weather is also more comfortable then, with cooler mornings and evenings perfect for game drives. While the green season brings lush landscapes and fantastic birding, the denser vegetation can make spotting larger mammals a bit more challenging.
