We love the sheer diversity packed into this corner of Nepal. One moment you're navigating the dense sal forests of the Terai, the air thick with the scent of damp earth and the calls of unseen birds, the next you're climbing into the cooler, mist-shrouded hills where rhododendrons bloom riotously. The birdlife here is simply phenomenal, a constant symphony for the ears. We recommend taking time to explore both the wetlands and the higher forests; the contrast is breathtaking and offers a truly unique safari experience.
Terrain & Altitude
A dramatic transition from the flat, alluvial plains of the Terai to the steep, forested foothills of the Himalayas.
100m-2,500m above sea level
Vegetation
Dense subtropical forests of sal trees and grasslands in the lowlands give way to oak, rhododendron, and pine forests at higher elevations.
Water Sources
The region is crisscrossed by numerous rivers flowing from the Himalayas, creating extensive wetlands and monsoon-fed streams.
Unique Features
The unique juxtaposition of the vast, biodiverse Terai grasslands and the cool, misty rhododendron forests of the border hills.
We always recommend flying domestically from Kathmandu to Biratnagar or Bhadrapur for the most efficient access to the Eastern Terai; the mountain flights themselves offer breathtaking views of the Himalayas. While driving from Kathmandu is an option, it's a long journey, and we find the time saved by flying allows for more immersive safari experiences upon arrival.
