    Planning & reference

The sheer scale of the High Atlas mountains is breathtaking, and the trek to Toubkal offers an unparalleled immersion into Berber culture. We love the sense of accomplishment reaching the summit, but equally cherish the quiet moments in remote villages, sharing mint tea with locals. The air is crisp, the stars are brilliant, and the hospitality is warm and genuine.

    Gate Times

Parc National de Toubkal does not have traditional gate times as it is a mountain park. Access is generally open, but permits are required for trekking and climbing, especially for routes like Toubkal summit. These can often be arranged through local guides or trekking agencies in Imlil. It is advisable to check with local authorities or your guide for any specific regulations or seasonal access restrictions, particularly during winter months when snow can make certain routes impassable.

    Tipping

Tipping is customary and appreciated. For guides, a tip of 10-15% of the tour cost is standard, or a daily rate of around 200-400 Moroccan Dirhams (MAD) is common. For muleteers or camp staff, a smaller daily amount of 50-100 MAD per person is appropriate. It's best to tip at the end of the trek, often collectively if you are part of a group. Always tip in Moroccan Dirhams.

    Dress Code

We recommend layering. For trekking, sturdy hiking boots are essential. Lightweight, breathable trousers and shirts are ideal for daytime. Bring a warm fleece or down jacket for evenings and higher altitudes, as temperatures can drop significantly. A waterproof and windproof outer shell is crucial. Neutral colours like khaki, green, and brown are best to blend in. For camp, comfortable, warm clothing is necessary. A hat for sun protection and a warm hat for the cold are vital.

    Photography

Photography is generally permitted, but always ask permission before photographing people, especially women. Be mindful of your surroundings and avoid disturbing wildlife. Drones are typically not allowed in national parks without special permits, and we advise against bringing one as it can cause distress to animals and may lead to confiscation. The light in the mountains is often dramatic, especially during sunrise and sunset; we love capturing the stark beauty of the landscape and the Berber villages clinging to the hillsides.

    Etiquette

Respect the environment and local culture. Stick to marked trails to prevent erosion and protect fragile ecosystems. Keep noise levels down to avoid disturbing wildlife and other trekkers. Never feed wild animals. When interacting with local communities, be polite and respectful. In camp, follow your guide's instructions regarding waste disposal and fire safety. Always ask before taking photos of people.
