Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time of year to experience Shawandha Lodge and the Gandoca-Manzanillo area?
We find the driest months, typically September to October and February to April, offer the most pleasant conditions for exploring. While the Caribbean coast can be humid year-round, these periods provide ample sunshine for beach days and wildlife spotting without the heavier rains. We recommend packing light layers and good insect repellent regardless of the season.
What kind of wildlife can we realistically expect to see directly at Shawandha Lodge or on its grounds?
We love how the lodge truly integrates with its natural surroundings; you don't even need to leave to spot incredible creatures. We've personally seen sloths, howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, and vibrant toucans right from our balcony. Keep an eye out for dart frogs and iguanas too, especially around the lush gardens.
What is the overall atmosphere and comfort level like at Shawandha Lodge? Is it more rustic or luxurious?
We consider Shawandha Lodge to strike a beautiful balance between rustic charm and comfortable luxury, feeling both authentic and indulgent. The bungalows are thoughtfully designed with natural materials, offering a serene, private escape amidst the jungle sounds. The open-air dining and pool area create a wonderfully relaxed, timeless ambiance that we truly appreciate.
How do we best get to Shawandha Lodge from San José, and what's the local transportation like once we're there?
We recommend flying into Limón (LIO) for the shortest transfer, though most international flights arrive in San José (SJO). From San José, we suggest a scenic domestic flight to Limón followed by a taxi or pre-arranged shuttle, or a comfortable shared shuttle directly. Once at the lodge, local taxis are readily available, and we love renting bicycles to explore the nearby beaches and villages at our own pace.
Besides visiting the Gandoca-Manzanillo refuge, what other unique activities can we enjoy directly from Shawandha Lodge?
Beyond the incredible refuge, we highly recommend exploring the stunning nearby beaches like Playa Chiquita and Punta Uva, which are perfect for swimming and snorkeling. You can also easily arrange chocolate farm tours, visit the Jaguar Rescue Center, or take a cooking class to experience the local Afro-Caribbean culture. We find the area offers a fantastic blend of nature, adventure, and cultural immersion.
