    Planning & reference

Visiting Cabo de Hornos is an expedition to the very edge of the world, a place of raw, untamed beauty and powerful winds. We love the profound sense of isolation and the dramatic, often moody, skies that create sensational sunsets. It truly feels like stepping back in time to an era of intrepid exploration.

    Gate Times

Access to Parque Nacional Cabo de Hornos is primarily by boat, typically as part of organized expeditions. There are no fixed gate times as it is not a drive-in park. Entry is controlled by park authorities and often requires prior arrangement with tour operators. We recommend booking well in advance, especially for expeditions during the peak season from November to March.

    Tipping

Tipping is not a mandatory custom in Chilean national parks, but it is appreciated for exceptional service. For expedition crew, a gratuity of 10-15% of the tour cost is customary if you are satisfied. For park rangers or any specific guides assisting with shore excursions, a small tip of $10-20 USD per person is a generous gesture. We advise tipping at the end of your expedition.

    Dress Code

Given the extreme southern latitude, layering is absolutely key. We recommend waterproof and windproof outer shells, thermal base layers, fleece mid-layers, and warm trousers. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are essential for any shore landings. A warm hat, gloves, and a scarf are non negotiable. Neutral, muted colours are best to avoid startling wildlife, though in this environment, practicality trumps camouflage.

    Photography

Photography is generally permitted, but always be mindful of wildlife. Maintain a respectful distance and avoid using flash, especially with birds. Drones are typically prohibited within national parks in Chile to protect wildlife and preserve the natural environment. We suggest bringing a good zoom lens for wildlife and wide angle lenses for the dramatic landscapes. The light can be challenging, so a tripod is useful for low light conditions.

    Etiquette

Respect the fragile environment. Stay on marked paths if any are present during landings. Keep noise levels to a minimum to avoid disturbing wildlife and other visitors. Never feed or approach animals. When on zodiacs or boats, follow the captain's instructions precisely. In camp or on the expedition vessel, be considerate of shared spaces and fellow travellers.
