    Planning & reference

The Salar del Huasco offers an otherworldly experience with its vast salt flats and unique geological formations. We love the profound sense of solitude here, a rare commodity on many safaris. The sunsets are sensational, painting the endless white expanse in hues of orange and pink.

    Gate Times

The park is generally accessible year round, though road conditions can be challenging in the wet season (December to March). We recommend checking with local authorities or your lodge for the most up-to-date information on access. There are no strict gate times, but it is advisable to enter and exit during daylight hours for safety. No advance booking is required for park entry itself, but accommodation within or near the park often needs to be booked well in advance, especially during peak seasons.

    Tipping

Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. For a private guide, we suggest around 10-15% of the daily rate, or a set amount of $20-30 USD per day. For lodge staff, a general tip pool of $10-15 USD per guest per day is customary, to be distributed amongst housekeeping, kitchen, and camp staff. Rangers do not expect tips.

    Dress Code

Layers are essential. We recommend breathable, moisture-wicking base layers, a fleece or down mid-layer, and a waterproof and windproof outer shell. Neutral colours like khaki, olive green, and beige are best for game drives and walks to avoid startling wildlife. Comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots are a must. In camp, casual and comfortable clothing is fine, but bring a warm jacket or sweater for cool evenings.

    Photography

Photography is generally permitted throughout the park. Be mindful of wildlife; avoid using flash photography directly at animals, especially at night. Drones are typically not allowed without special permits and prior authorization from park authorities. We love capturing the vast, stark landscapes and the unique salt formations. Early morning and late afternoon light offers the most dramatic and beautiful photographic opportunities.

    Etiquette

Maintain a quiet presence. Keep voices low and avoid sudden movements, especially when observing wildlife. Always stay within designated viewing areas or vehicles unless accompanied by a guide. Never feed or approach wildlife. Respect the fragile environment; do not litter or disturb vegetation. In camp, be considerate of other guests' privacy and quiet.
