Frequently Asked Questions
We're planning a trip to Tongariro National Park and saw The Crossing Lodge. What's the vibe there, and is it really worth the luxury price tag?
Absolutely. The Crossing Lodge feels luxurious and timeless, a welcome sanctuary after a day exploring the dramatic volcanic landscapes. We love the understated elegance and the exceptional service that makes you feel truly pampered. For those seeking comfort and a touch of indulgence near the park, it's a superb choice.
Besides hiking Tongariro, what other activities does The Crossing Lodge offer, and are they worth booking?
While the park is the main draw, we highly recommend indulging in the lodge's spa facilities. It's the perfect way to soothe tired muscles after a long trek. They also offer guided walks and stargazing experiences which are quite special, especially on clear nights when the sky is incredibly vivid.
What's the best time of year to visit The Crossing Lodge and Tongariro National Park for optimal weather and fewer crowds?
We find the shoulder seasons, spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May), offer the best balance. The weather is generally more stable for hiking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, and you'll encounter fewer visitors than during the peak summer months. The autumn colours are also spectacular.
We're concerned about safety when hiking in Tongariro. Does The Crossing Lodge offer any support or advice for trekkers?
The lodge staff are incredibly knowledgeable about the park and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. They provide excellent safety briefings, weather updates, and can help arrange transport to and from the track. We felt very well prepared and secure knowing we had their support.
What kind of wildlife can we expect to see around The Crossing Lodge and in Tongariro National Park?
While Tongariro is primarily known for its stunning geology, keep an eye out for native birds like the fantail and the tui in the surrounding bush. You might also spot some hardy alpine plants. Don't expect large game, but the natural beauty of the flora and birdlife is a significant part of the charm.
