We personally love the shoulder seasons, spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May), for the best balance of pleasant weather and fewer visitors. Summer can be busy. Keep an eye out for Hector's dolphins playing offshore, and you might even spot fur seals lounging on the rocks near the coast. Birdlife is also abundant in the surrounding bush.
