    Planning & reference

Île de Mogador offers a raw, windswept beauty unlike anywhere else in Morocco. We love the dramatic cliffs, the cacophony of seabirds, and the feeling of being on the edge of the world. It's a place for quiet contemplation and observing nature in its untamed state.

    Gate Times

Access to Île de Mogador is via boat from Essaouira. Boats typically run from morning until late afternoon. There are no strict gate times as it's an island nature reserve, but boat schedules dictate access. We recommend checking with local boat operators in Essaouira for the most current departure times and booking your return trip in advance, especially during peak season. No special permits are required beyond the boat fare.

    Tipping

Tipping is customary in Morocco. For boat captains, a small tip of 10-20 dirhams per person is appreciated if you've had a good trip. If you hire a local guide in Essaouira to accompany you to the island, a tip of 50-100 dirhams is appropriate. For camp staff or rangers, which are less common on Mogador itself, follow general Moroccan service industry standards, around 10 percent for exceptional service.

    Dress Code

We advise dressing in light, breathable layers. Neutral colours like khaki, beige, and olive green are best to blend in with the environment and avoid startling wildlife. Comfortable walking shoes are essential as you'll be exploring on foot. A light windbreaker or fleece is useful for cooler mornings and evenings, and a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses are crucial for sun protection. For evenings in camp, casual and comfortable attire is fine.

    Photography

Photography is generally permitted, but always be respectful of wildlife and avoid disturbing them. Maintain a safe distance. Drones are typically not allowed in protected nature reserves like Île de Mogador without special permits, so we advise leaving them at home. The light here is often soft and beautiful, especially during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset. We love capturing the dramatic coastal landscapes and the resident birdlife.

    Etiquette

Respect the island's natural environment. Stick to marked paths where available and avoid disturbing the flora and fauna. Keep noise levels to a minimum to enhance your wildlife viewing experience and avoid stressing the animals. Do not feed any wildlife. When on the boat, follow the captain's instructions. On the island, maintain a respectful distance from all wildlife, especially the Eleonora's falcons during nesting season.
