    Planning & reference

Lago Peñuelas offers a surprisingly accessible yet wild escape, a true gem for birdwatchers. We love the tranquility here, especially during the week when you can have the shores almost to yourself. The sunsets over the water are simply sensational, painting the sky in hues you won't forget.

    Gate Times

Reserva Nacional Lago Peñuelas is generally open from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, though hours can vary slightly with the seasons. We recommend checking the official CONAF website or calling ahead, especially if visiting during off peak months. No advance booking is typically required for day visitors, but it's wise to confirm entry requirements, particularly for larger groups or specific activities.

    Tipping

Tipping is not a deeply ingrained custom in Chile as it is in some other safari destinations. For park rangers, a small gratuity is appreciated for exceptional service, perhaps around 5-10 USD equivalent. For private guides or lodge staff if you are staying nearby, 10-15% of the service cost is a reasonable guideline, but always tip based on the quality of service received.

    Dress Code

We advise dressing in layers. For game drives and walks, neutral, earthy tones are best to blend in with the environment. Think khaki, olive green, and brown. Comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots are essential. Evenings can be cool, so a fleece or warm jacket is a must, regardless of the season. A wide brimmed hat for sun protection is also highly recommended.

    Photography

Photography is permitted throughout the reserve. We encourage capturing the stunning landscapes and diverse birdlife. Be mindful of wildlife; maintain a respectful distance and avoid using flash photography, especially at dawn and dusk, as it can disturb the animals. Drone usage is generally restricted within national parks to protect wildlife and visitor experience. Always check for specific signage or inquire with park officials before flying a drone.

    Etiquette

We always advocate for quiet observation. Keep noise levels to a minimum to avoid startling wildlife and to fully appreciate the natural sounds of the reserve. Stay within designated paths and viewing areas. Never feed or approach wild animals. In camp or picnic areas, ensure you leave no trace, taking all your rubbish with you. Respect the peace of other visitors.
